James was 73 years old and fighting cancer when he was placed in Alameda Healthcare & Wellness Center — right here in the East Bay. Staff there failed to get him to chemotherapy seven times. He developed severe, infected pressure sores that went untreated for weeks. When his family sought answers, they found falsified records. A jury found 1,437 violations of his rights and awarded $7.6 million. The facility’s owner? A billionaire who controls 88 nursing homes across California, some with licenses suspended, some pending, yet still allowed to operate. He is still in business. James is not.
died of his wounds and neglect — not on the battlefield,
but in a nursing home, in Alameda.
This Is Not a Few Bad Facilities. This Is a System.
Across California, for-profit chains are buying up nursing homes, hospices, and healthcare facilities — then cutting staff, falsifying records, and diverting millions to corporate owners while elders suffer and caregivers are ground down. One chain committed 25,000 staffing violations while extracting $31 million. Over 280 hospice licenses have been revoked for fraud. Regulators knew. They let it continue.

We host community teach-ins, collect stories, and build coalitions to demand what should never have been in question: compassionate, non-profit care through all of aging, illness, and dying.
